Hollowed Ground

I know, I know. It's hallowed. Work with me, people. Sheesh.

On Sunday we had a few hours out on the bikes. It was the first time out in quite a few weeks. We meandered up around Bear Mountain, where there were a bazillion bikes at the gas station at the traffic circle by Camp Smith.

No surprise, as folks started filtering out in groups, the State Troopers who were waiting like sharks behind a neighboring building charged to pull people over. With that, we waited around a few more minutes and leisurely made our way southeast towards home.

Along the way, we made a little detour throught the town of Sleepy Hollow, of course made famour by Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Unfortunately we didn't set out on a walking tour, but it certainly looks like it would be quite a charming place to wander around.

(pay no attention to my overdue inspection sticker)

It was a fitting time of year to blow through and I'd cetainly like to go back and explore when we have more time to really look around. I hope my life's To-Do List never really catches up to the I've-Done List. There is always something to look forward to.

Tucked away behind an unimposing wall sits the Humes Japanese Stroll Garden. One of Long Island's quiet treasures. Surely worth the $7 to keep the dream alive~

Wednesday Wanderings

Sometimes when you're in the clutches of that mental state that lives in the fog between sleep and wakefulness, anything seems reasonable.

I'm finishing up my month long break inbetween my old shitty job and my new fabulous one, so I'll just roll with the punches and see where life takes me. Like oh, I don't know. Riding around in circles looking at fiberglass legs. Whatever. I'm just going with it.

New London, Ct -
Ledge Lighthouse

I hopped on the New London-Orient Point ferry to head back to the Island. I had no idea I was so sleepy. As soon as we got underway, I snapped a quick pic of the Ledge Lighthouse and then layed down on one of the outside benches that run along the length of the ferry. The next thing i know, I open my eyes and look over the railing to see the Plum Island Lighthouse. I had just dropped right out into a deep sleep for an hour of the hour and twenty ride.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I fell asleep on the sidewalk next to a gas station once, and at various picnic tables, parks...etc. ::shrug:: One day in my slumber, i'll just be randomly carted off with the trash and no one will hear from me again :oD

Get to the point

Sunday morning gave me a few free hours. We decided to take a quick spin out to Orient Point so that I could snap a photo of the lighthouse near the ferry terminal, known as the Coffee Pot.

One of the farm stands had this cute little Fiat ::cough:: wagon for sale. I could've probably put it in my tankbag and brought it home.

We stopped and had a soda on the porch of the Orient Country Store. Time stood still here.

We'll Leave the Light on for Ya

Jiminy Crickets, it felt like it was 186 degrees out today. I had 3 hours to kill so I figured I'd pop put for a quick scoot around town. Because traffic is a nightmare in these parts, I sometimes try to work within a basic framework of seeing some of the local sights. It makes for a more entertaining ride than just meandering around aimlessly. When I'm in places off of this sandbar that have more elbowroom, wandering around aimlessly is often precisely what I do. This is generally referred to around the house as 'riding around in circles'.

 'Where did you go today?'
'No place, really. I just rode around in circles.'

I pulled out of my driveway with the intention of visiting the Eaton's Neck Lighthouse. Of course, being armed with the information that the lighthouse is now closed to the public because it is a Coast Guard station might’ve been helpful before I ventured out into the oppressive haze. I believe G.I. Joe said it best,” knowing is half the battle.” So, not unlike my denial at the base of Mount Washington, so too was I so close yet so far from my goal. No dice on the lighthouse. I’m starting to get a complex.

Long Island being an island and all has quite a few lighthouses that are reachable or at least viewable from the mainland. While simmering away in my jacket with the sun on my back, thinking about the lighthouse, I remembered riding out to the Montauk Point Lighthouse back in 1999. Sure enough, I still have a pic or two tucked away in the way back photo storage machine here. It also had some pretty hokey pics of me taking myself far too seriously. :::sigh::: Youth is wasted on the young.

It one of my early morning trips to ride around in circles this past January, I stopped at the Horton’s Point lighthouse in Southold.

I guess trying to visit the other lighthouses will give me something to do. Muffler Men, Lighthouses, giant balls of twine… so many things to see, so little time.

Horton Point Lighthouse – January 2007

This site has a nice map & personal photos of the lighthouses here on the Island as well as elsewhere if you nav up thru their pages.
